New Metro Diner is the real deal
Legit diners exist outside of Jersey. This is one of them.
When a friend from Florida went all gaga over Metro Diner opening an outpost May 16 in Castleton, I did one giant yawn.
I’ve seen too many “savvy” restaurateurs roll out “diner concepts.” That guy who put waitresses in red poodle skirts and charged $15 for macaroni and cheese? He closed up shop after 18 months.
I’m originally from New Jersey, diner central. Revolving dessert cases by diner front doors there ruin you. Napoleons and strawberry cheesecakes, German chocolate layer cakes, tapioca and so many pies circling that you get hypnotized before you even consider the gravy-smothered, open-faced, roast beef sandwich. The sweets whisper, “There are no diners outside of New Jersey. There are no diners outside of New Jersey.”
Of course, legit diners exist elsewhere. Metro Diner turns out to be one of them. Just about everything on the menu costs $10 or less. The place sits mostly hidden in Clearwater Crossing shopping center, 3954 E. 82nd St. Find it a few doors down from Babies“R”Us.
Another Metro Diner opens in August in Greenwood, 7725 U.S. 31 South, near Wal-Mart. Partners are looking around the Butler campus, too.
